Qualcomm and Allwinner teaming up for LTE tablets

by on03 June 2015

Another Chinese marriage of convenience

Chipmakers Qualcomm and Allwinner are teaming up to develop and market affordable LTE tablet platforms for the Chinese market.

In case this sounds familiar, you are right – Intel recently joined forces with Rockchip to market its SoFIA Atom x3 processors in China. However, most SoFIA models are 3G only, although the flagship part (which still doesn’t appear to be available in retail), sports LTE connectivity.

Qualcomm and Rockchip announced their partnership in a statement, noting that Allwinner will be offering “system solution services” based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 and Snapdragon 210 processors. These chips are commonly used in entry level LTE phones, but so far they didn’t end up in many tablets that we know of.

Allwinner’s relationship with Chinese OEMs and ODMs should make a difference. The local market is dominated by Rockchip and Allwinner tablets, although MediaTek and Intel have started to grab market share as well.

Allwinner executive vice president Oliver Tang said the company expects to see a “wave of high-volume” tablets based on Snapdragon processors later this year.

However, it should also be noted that MediaTek and Intel also have LTE parts to offer, and both chipmakers are a force to be reckoned with in the Chinese market.
