With 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU with hardware ray tracing

Apple has officially announced its new iPhone 15 lineup, as well as shed a bit more light on the new A17 Pro SoC that will be powering the flagship iPhone 15 Pro series. Based on the 3nm EUV manufacturing process, Apple promises up to 10 percent faster CPU and up to 20 percent faster GPU processing power, and hardware ray tracing, bringing big AAA game titles to the iPhone.

Specification-wise, at least from what could be gathered during Apple's event, the A17 Pro packs 19 billion transistors and is now confirmed to be manufactured on 3nm EUV manufacturing process. It has a 6-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, making it up to 10 percent faster as well as having 3x better performance per watt compared to the competition, at least according to Apple. The CPU brings improved branch prediction and wider decode and execution engines.

The biggest improvement comes from what Apple calls a "breakthrough new GPU", which is a 6-core GPU with new Apple-designed shader architecture, mesh shading, and improved efficiency. It is up to 20 percent faster, has hardware ray tracing, making it up to 4x faster than software-based ray tracing on A16 SoC, and has Metal FX upscaling. All of this came with a big promise of AAA gaming on iPhone 15 Pro, including Capcom's Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Ubisoft's The Division Resurgence and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Apple was also keen to note that the A17 Pro SoC comes with a whole new 16-core Neural Engine, which should be 2x faster and peak at 35 TOPS. The rest of the improvements include dedicated video engines and display controller, AV1 decode support, and more.

The big part of this gaming on iPhone 15 Pro lineup will be focused on Metal FX upscaling, although it appears that the A17 Pro SoC packs quite a punch, but we'll wait for some benchmarks before jumping to conclusions.
