Apple 5G phone delayed until late 2020

Depending on Intel’s 10nm process

The fruity cargo cult Apple will not get an iPhone with 5G until late 2020.

Part of the problem is that Apple is waiting for Intel’s 8161 5G modem chip to arrive. Intel hopes to fabricate the 8161 using its 10-nanometer process, which increases transistor density for more speed and efficiency.

However, waiting for Intel 10nm is a bit like waiting for Godot, and Jobs’ Mob is not a happy bunny.

Sources in the spaceship indicate that Apple is not happy with the way Chipzilla is solving heat dissipation issues caused by the 8060 modem chip.

Many wireless carriers, including Verizon and AT&T in the US, will initially rely on millimetre-wave spectrum (between 28 gigahertz and 39 Ghz) to connect the first 5G phones. But millimetre-wave signal requires some heavy lifting from the modem chips and RF chains.

This causes the release of higher than normal levels of thermal energy inside the phone – so much so that the heat can be felt on the outside of the phone.

It also hits battery life, something which has always been a problem for iPhones.

Apple still does not feel these issues are enough to need to bury the hatchet with Qualcomm, but it has talked to MediaTek about potentially supplying 5G modem chips.

The wireless industry’s first wave of 5G handsets will debut at the Mobile World Congress show next February. Android phones from such manufacturers as Oppo, Huawei, and Xiaomi will have 5G modem chips made by Qualcomm.

The Tame Apple Press insists that Jobs’ Mob is wise to wait. It is much better to show up late and convince people it invented the technology, rather than being at the forefront of innovation and end up with a few misses. Besides most of the telcos will not be ready for the technology.
