President Ahmadinejad claims

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he did not call for a ban on Facebook during the country's presidential election. Facebook was being used by President Ahmadinejad's challengers to spread their message and mysteriously the Iranian government had the site switched off.

Of course this angered many of the Iranians who use the service and some think the move could cost Ahmadinejad votes. But Ahmadinejad said the switch off had nothing to do with him. When asked by hacks he said that he would look into it. He added that he believed in maximum freedom of expression.

Asked whether he would order that access to Facebook be reinstated, Ahmadinejad responded that he would "see if there is a complaint" that may be presented to the judiciary. Apparently the block was ordered by the Masadiq Committee, made up of representatives from Iran's intelligence ministry, judiciary and others. After a few hours, the block was lifted, but then reinstated later.
