Samsung makes postage stamp-sized Flash SSD

by on01 June 2016

Up to 512GB of NAND flash

Samsung has begun mass producing a new SSD which is smaller than a postage stamp.

The PM971-NVMe fits up to 512GB of NAND flash, a controller, and RAM into a single BGA chip measuring 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm and weighing just one gram.

According to a press release the small size does not mean it will be slow. The PM971-NVMe can hit 1.5GBps read speeds and 800MBps write speeds with the wind behind it and when it is going downhill.

The PM971-NVMe uses 20nm NAND chips and has 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM as a cache. The NAND uses a portion of its triple-level cell but as a write buffer. The plan is to make the SSD in 512GB, 256GB and 128GB capacities.

It is not clear what interface it will use to connect to the PC. However it is so small it could be mounted to the standard M.2 card or even integrated into tablet and laptop motherboards. This will mean that the tablets and laptops can get even thinner.

Samsung has not said how much its new SSDs will cost when they come out, or if there will be a consumer version for people to buy. Like we said, the future of the chip could be mounted into the motherboard.
