Apple about to invent RISC-V

by on06 September 2021

About time

While it has been around for years, much like the rounded rectangle, RISC-V has been waiting for Apple to invent it and it looks like that will happen.

Apparently, Jobs' Mob wants to hire a programmer who knows about RISC-V, a processor technology that competes with the ARM designs that power iPhones, iPads and newer Macs.

The company's interest emerged in a job posting for a "RISC-V high performance programmer" that Apple published.

The advert raised a few eyebrows. After all what would Apple want with the technology when it has all its money invested in ARM hardware.

The programmer will work on a team that's "implementing innovative RISC-V solutions and state of the art routines. This is to support the necessary computation for such things as machine learning, vision algorithms, signal and video processing", the job description says.

It is not clear why Apple’s own overhyped ARM-Based chips can’t do that, as we would have thought that sort of spec would be in its wheelhouse.
