In case you missed it, back when Intel officially launched the 40th anniversary Core i7-8086K limited edition CPU, it also announced a sweepstakes, available for residents of the USA, Canada (excluding Quebec), UK, France, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and China (excluding Hong Kong), where it will be giving away 8,086 of these processors to lucky winners.
In order to rain on its parade, and according to AMD, to "celebrate the next 40-years of high-performance computing", the company is now offering to exchange that Core i7-8086K CPU for a Threadripper 1950X CPU for the first 40 U.S.-based winners. AMD was keen to note that "they appreciate the advancements they’ve (Intel) helped drive with the x86 architecture over the last four decades", they are "ready to take it from here".
To be quite honest, this is a rather tempting deal from AMD considering that while the Core i7-8086K is a limited edition CPU, it is still a binned Core i7-8700K with 6-cores, 12-threads, 12MB of L3 cache. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X offers 10-more cores and 20-threads with its 16-core/32-thread design as well as generally a better platform with more PCIe lanes and plenty of future-proof TR4 motherboards.
Of course, there is also a slight difference in price of around US $325, since the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is selling for $749.99 and the Core i7-8086K goes for $424.99.
AMD says that steps for those that want to exchange the CPU will be available on June 25th at 1:00:00 PM EDT over at AMD's dedicated page.
