CPU and GPU recycling could be just the thing

Cash in your chips

An American startup wants to offer a quick and easy way to get cash back for old hardware.

According to Bit Tech,  SellGPU is offering the chance to send your old hardware into a pre-paid envelope and get some cash back on your own card.

Originally the cunning plan was to concentrate on graphics processors, but now SellGPU.com has now announced that it is branching out into CPUs. There are limits. It only wants Intel Core processors from the second generation (Sandy Bridge) onwards and any AMD FX-branded parts. The chips must go and must never have been overclocked which is a bit silly as most of the target market would do a bit of overclocking.

However it would work better with big companies and corporates who might see it as a chance to earn a bit of cash when they retire their old boxes.

Start-up CEO Said Hafez said that SellGPU will revolutionize PC upgrade cycles and will bring more value to companies and individuals undergoing an upgrade process.

An Intel Core i5-2500K will get $55 from SellGPU. Normally you can pick one of those up for double on an auction site. However, you don’t have to sell it yourself, all you need to do is put it into the post and you get your cash after the chip has passed its testing.

At the moment SellGPU just exists in the US, but there is nothing to stop a similar operation in the EU. The difference is that the EU has a very good recycling network which is much better than the US and is improving all the time. Of course the recycling industry is not going to give you any money for your CPU or GPU over here.
