Premium tablet as iPad Pro competition

At its virtual MWC 2020 event, Huawei also described a European announcement of the MatePad Pro, an answer to the iPad Pro tablet, and it will be available in 5G, 4G and WiFi-only versions.

Huawei had already unveiled its competitor to the Apple iPad Pro in the form of a 10.8-inch tablet called the MatePad Pro back in November, next to all the laptops and other smartphones. Unfortunately, most of these devices were limited to the Chinese market, but that will now change.

Punch-hole AMOLED screen, Kirin 990 (5G) SoC, and keyboard/pencil accessories

Measuring 246x159x7.2mm (9.69x6.26x0.28-inches) and weighing in at 460g (1lbs)the MatePad Pro is an impressive looking device built around a 10.8-inch AMOLED panel with 2560x1600 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio, which means it has a 280ppi of pixel density and 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, mostly thanks to its slim 4.9mm bezels.

The screen has a punch-hole for the front 8-megapixel camera and offers 540nits of maximum brightness as well as DCI-P3 color gamut.

Powering the Matepad Pro is Huawei's own flagship Kirin 990 SoC  - Kirin 990 5G for the 5G version -  paired up with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage options.

Huawei is quite proud of its Matepad Pro accessories which include keyboard and stylus. The Smart Keyboard looks nice and doubles up as a cover, while the M-Pencil stylus features wireless charging, low 20ms latency, and 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

The rest of the features include a rear placed 13-megapixel camera, four four-channel speakers placed in each of the corners, an array of five microphones, hefty 7250mAh battery, USB 3.1 Type-C port, 802.11ac dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.1, as well as LTE support on the LTE version.

It runs on Android 10 OS with EMUI 10 on top of it, and as it still lacks Google Mobile Services, unfortunately.

As I said, the MatePad Pro will be available in three versions, 5G, LTE (4G) and the WiFi-only version. Unfortunately, Europe might be only be getting the LTE and WiFi-only versions and these could be available in April. It should be available in Danxia Orange, Fritillary White, Aoyama Dai and Night Ash color options.

The WiFi-only and LTE versions both come in 6/128GB and 8/256GB configurations, priced at €549/€599 and €599/€699, respectively. The 5G version comes in 8/256GB and 8/512GB configurations, and it is priced at €799 and €949, respectively, although it won't be coming to Europe. The Smart Keyboard accessory is not cheap at €129, and the M-Pencil will sell for €99. You can also get covers, the Folio Cover and the MatePad Sleeve, both priced at €39.
