GlobalPlatform today announces that a billion GlobalPlatform-compliant Trusted Execution Environment (TEE)-enabled processors were shipped for the smartphone market in 2018.

The outfit claims its TEE is becoming the de facto choice for smartphone manufacturers because of the security and flexibility it offers – apparently, you can have cake or biscuits with your Tee.

GlobalPlatform’s Technical Director, Gil Bernabeu. Today’s announcement demonstrates not only this growth, but also the faith the industry has in GlobalPlatform as the standard for secure digital services and devices.

Bernabeu said: “The success of these TEEs in protecting smartphones and their services, alongside our continued investment in the specifications and certification initiatives, is seeing adoption diversify. GlobalPlatform’s alignment with a wide range of global, regional and sector-specific requirements has led to the growing deployment of compliant TEEs in new areas like industrial automation, enterprise IT, premium multimedia content and the internet of things. While this additional adoption is currently hard to track, it is a testament to the value of the technology, and we look forward to sharing data as these markets mature.”

For those who came in late EE is a secure area of the main processor of a connected device that ensures sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in a trusted environment. The TEE isolates trusted applications, keeping them away from any malware in the device OS and separate from other apps stored in the TEE. Because of this, the TEE is an essential environment within all devices as the secure services market evolves.

To enable device manufacturers to proactively market their products as meeting the needs of digital service providers, GlobalPlatform manages functional and security certification programs for TEEs. These objectively illustrate that a device manufacturer’s GlobalPlatform-based secure component and digital service management capabilities are interoperable and meet required security levels, providing reassurance that it will protect digital services and enable them to perform as intended in the field.
