Microsoft will not get the band back together

Singing the sales blues

Microsoft has decided to kill off its band, wearable fitness gizmo – arguably one of the better fitness toys out there.

Vole says it has sold out of its Microsoft Band 2 and will not be making a 3 anytime soon. While the Band did not exactly sell out overnight it was one of the better fitness trackers out there. It had an easy to read screen and its controls were straight forward.

I should point out; I am biased on this. I bought the Band 1 and liked it. It had a big easy to read screen and a simple interface. Its tracking information also warned me of a health problem which turned out killed most of my father’s side of the family and enabled me to sort it out. While Apple stole all the headlines and sucked up half the watch market, the Band was like an unsung hero with much better battery life.

But even I didn’t upgrade to the Band 2 – the band 2 was fine.

Microsoft has removed all references to its Band devices from its Microsoft Store listing online and its Band software development kit (SDK) today, which isn't surprising given it's no longer selling Band 2 devices.

Microsoft is believed to have disbanded the software team that was looking to bring Windows 10 to the Band a couple months ago. I've received various tips that at least some of the Band hardware team members have dispersed, too, with some moving to other Microsoft hardware teams inside the company.

In a statement Microsoft said:

"We have sold through our existing Band 2 inventory and have no plans to release another Band device this year. We remain committed to supporting our Microsoft Band 2 customers through Microsoft Stores and our customer support channels and will continue to invest in the Microsoft Health platform, which is open to all hardware and apps partners across Windows, iOS, and Android devices."
