India has ditched its $10 PC in favor of the OLPC
Foundation's so called 'hundred dollar' laptop.
India's $10 laptop was the silliest bit of
marketing that has been seen. It was essentially a hard-drive with a few USB
ports, but it managed to convince a fair number of Indian politicians it was
viable, even if it started looking as if it was $30.
Now the Indian government has signed an agreement
with the One Laptop Per Child Foundation that will see 250,000 XO laptops
distributed to students. So far there is no word if India will be using the
XP version of the XO machine that comes bundled with Windows XP and Microsoft’s
Student Innovation Suite, which includes Microsoft Office 2003 as well as
Learning Essentials 1.0 for Microsoft Office. Adding XP adds $3 to the price
tag.
