Microsoft update fixes Windows 10 screen freezes

by on02 September 2016

Anniversary edition finally fixed

When Microsoft issued its Windows 10 anniversary edition in July there were complaints that it did not play nice with SSDs.

This was a big thing as many people install Windows on SSDs and use ordinary drives for data. However, after the anniversary edition, which was like the first service pack, was released, those with SSDs started to experience all sorts of instability and screen freezes.

Vole acknowledged the problem and provided a couple of workarounds that users could try, promising that a permanent fix would eventually be made available. Microsoft says that it has addressed the freezing issues in the latest Cumulative Update that it just released.

A spokesVole said it only received “a small number of complaints” which is what IT companies always say when they have made a howler of biblical proportions.

“With the help of users and MVP’s who posted on this thread an investigation determined that a small fraction of users who had moved app information to a second logical drive could encounter this issue", the spokesVole said.

The fix for the freezing issues is part of the Cumulative Update that was rolled out on August 31, which should be automatically installed through Windows Update. The update in question is officially known as KB3176938, and it brings the Windows 10 build number to 14393.105. Vole is not saying which is the fix for the freezing problems.

Those who have rolled back the Anniversary Update can get Windows 10 up to date by going here and pressing the update now button.
