Intel expects to sell more Atoms in 1H 2012

by on09 April 2012

Compared to 2H 2011

It looks like the Atom delay left quite a big scar on the sale of Intel’s entry level platform in the second half of 2011.

New Atoms sort of showed up in Intel price lists in September, but they went on sale only very late part of Q4 2011. This is probably one of the main reasons why Intel expected that it could sell more Atoms in first half of 2012. The second reason is that people are going more after tablets then after netbooks and nettops but this trend has been around for more than a year now.

Intel’s expansion of Atom desktop version, meant for nettops and other kind of desktops should continue in 2H 2012 where Intel plans to ship similar number to what it plans to ship in 1H 2012.
We don’t know the exact number but it is around 10 percent of total desktop shipments in 1H 2012 are supposed to be Atom based and this trend should continue in 2H 2012 and 1H 2013. This is rather optimistic but nettop based on New Atom D2000 series are quite good for home theaters and home desktop systems.

In 1H 2011 the number of desktop Atoms shipped was way below 10 percent, it was closer to 5 percent of total desktop shipments. We will see how this plays out for Intel.
