Clearing the path to the Sandy Bridge
As Intel gets close to releasing its new Sandy Bridge processor it has decided that it will be the “night of the Long Knives” for more than 21 45nm processors.

According to Digitimes Intel already issued product discontinuance notice for its Core i7-975X earlier this quarter with end of lifecycle which will take place in the first quarter of 2011. The Core i5-750 will go in the third quarter. As for 45nm quad-core products, four processors including Core 2 Quad Q9650 and five more processors including Core 2 Quad Q9300, 9505 and Q8400 will receive PDN the chop in the third quarter.

For the dual-core, Core 2 Duo E8600 and E8500 are already doomed, with Core 2 Duo E7500 and E7600 scheduled to go at the end of the next year. The last call has been made on the Pentium E6300, while Pentium E5600 will go in the third quarter. Pentium E5600 and E6600 will be toast in the first quarter of 2011. The Celeron E3200 and E3300 will see PDN in the first and the fourth quarter of 2011, respectively.

Intel wants to launch 10 new processors including quad-core Core i7-2600 and 2500, Core i5 2400 and 2300, and dual-core Core i3-2120 and 2100.  Intel said that the Quad-core processors will consume only 95W with dual-core CPUs to use 65W.
