Metal mobiles puts plastic moulding industry in crisis

Industry stagnation

The move to metallic smartphone case design has placed the plastic injection moulding industry in crisis.

According to ETNews, plastic injection case makers were already suffering from a decrease in smartphone sales, but when Samsung and Apple moved to metal cases they took a pounding.

Plastic case makers, such as INTOPS, Shinyang and Woojeon & Handan, are suffering. The rate at which Samsung Electronics is using metal casing is seven percent of sales. The forecast is that this figure will continuously increase after next year. Chinese companies, which joined the market as late starters, are showing signs to follow Samsung Electronics. HTC, Lenovo and ZTE have already released new smart phone models applied with metal casing. In addition, Xiaomi decided to use a metal case for its smart phone model Mi 4.

What is causing a big headache is that a large number of companies have invested large amounts of fund in purchasing projection moulding machinery or entering the Vietnamese market in the last several years.

One plastic case maker said that suppliers inevitably have to follow the market trend. It is an urgent task for the plastic case makers to scrape up the money for investment and to secure competitive power in the metal casing market as quickly as possible.
