iPhone 4 more prone to damage than predecessors

Warranty service SquareTrade has announced that Apple’s iPhone 4 is 82 percent more likely to be damaged than previous iPhone models.

The company examined some 22,000 customers and found that the 4 was quite a bit more fragile than its predecessors. For example, the iPhone 4 features a glass backside, while previous models used aluminium or heavy duty plastic.

The same aluminosilicate glass is used on the screen, with similar results. Apple claims that the glass is 20 times harder than plastic and that it’s comparable to sapphire crystal in terms of strength. While this might be true, it’s clearly not flexible enough and like any crystal it’s not forgiving.
