Sources claim that this is the case

We are hearing whispers that RIM is working on a deal for a BlackBerry TV service that will be in conjunction with the BlackBerry App World that they are getting ready go live with next week. While they are not ready to announce it yet, the announcement of a download TV service for BlackBerry is likely to happen once all of the partnerships are sorted out.

From what we are hearing, the BlackBerry TV service will offer an unlimited monthly usage subscription model. Once the user selects a program, the content is downloaded in the background over the BlackBerry’s WiFi connection. Reportedly, once the deal is in place RIM will have multiple content streams from both broadcast and cable network providers.

The use of WiFi does suggest that some BlackBerry devices might not be able to support the BlackBerry TV service. It is likely that only the latest models, such as the Bold, Curve 8900, and Storm will support the use of BlackBerry TV.

With the upcoming launch of App World, this does sound like a good move by RIM to go in this direction. We don’t expect an announcement until the upcoming CTIA show. We do expect that it is possible that RIM may have a few more partnerships to make and things to sort out before the official announcement, but it is nice to think that this TV service is in the pipeline.
