Corsair releases M.2 NVMe MP500 SSD series

by on13 December 2016

Coming in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities

Corsair has released a new addition to its Force Series SSD lineup, the MP500 M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD series, which promises impressive performance of up to 3,000MB/s for read and up to 2,400MB/s for write.

Based on standard M.2 2280 form-factor, the Corsair Force Series MP500 SSD uses Phison PS5007-E7 NVMe controller with PCIe Gen3 x4 interface and comes in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities. Unfortunately, Corsair did not release any information regarding the NAND flash used on the MP500 series but the aforementioned controller supports 1z nm MLC/TLC NAND as well as 3D NAND.

Corsair also made sure that its MP500 SSD series looks cool as well, featuring a black PCB and a thin black cover hiding all the chips, as this should go well with the recent motherboard color trend. The MP500 SSD series also comes with a toughened contact surface material with 30um gold finger thickness that should improve contact to the motherboard.

Corsair promises performance of up to 3,000MB/s read and up to 2,400MB/s write sequential performance measured in ATTO and slightly lower sequential read and write performance in CrystalDiskMark benchmark, reaching 2,400MB/s read and 1,500MB/s write (2,300MB/s and 1,400MB/s on the 120GB model).

The 4KB random read and write performance peaks at 250K IOPS and 210K IOPS (150K and 90K IOPS on the 120GB model). The 120GB model comes with 256MB of DDR3 cache, 240GB comes with 512MB and 480GB model comes with 1024MB of DDR3 cache.

Corsair's MP500 SSD series also comes with several technologies, including SmartECC, SmartRefresh and SmartFlush, which is intended, it's claimed, to  protect the drive from data corruption and power loss as well as other static and dynamic wear-leveling that ought to  increase its reliability. All models are backed by a three-year warranty.

All three models are currently available directly from Corsair's website priced at US $109.99 for the 120GB model, US $169.99 for the 240GB model and US $324.99 for the 480GB model. Although these prices do not sound bad, it will be a hard sell in the market where Samsung reigns supreme. Hopefully, Corsair will also extend the MP500 range with higher capacity models as well.
