Seagate intros first 3TB drive

FreeAgent GoFlex Desk

Seagate has started shipping the world’s first consumer 3TB hard drive in the guise of the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk.

The company hasn’t revealed the full specs of the 3.5-inch drive used in the FreeAgent, so we still don’t know the RPM or the cache size. However, it’s quite obvious that it will be the first hard drive maker to offer a proper 3TB desktop drive.

In addition, the new 3TB drive is priced rather reasonably. It costs $249, which is $70 more than the 2TB unit and less than twice as expensive than the 1TB drive from the same series.

Thanks to its modular design, the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk can be equipped with three adapter kits that enable FireWire or USB 3.0 support.
