Fitbit solves its first murder

Accused would have gotten away with it but for pesky tracker

Connecticut man accused in his wife's murder might have gotten away with it — if not for the victim's pesky Fitbit fitness tracker.

In December Connie Dabate was discovered inside the home with gunshot wounds from a Magnum .357, a gun Dabate bought months prior. She was tied to a chair in the kitchen in the incident.

Richard Dabate, 40, has been charged with bumping off his wife. Dabate called 911 reporting that his wife was the victim of a home invasion, alleging that she was shot dead by a "tall, obese man" with a deep voice like actor Vin Diesel's, sporting "camouflage and a mask," according to an arrest warrant.

However, Dabate came unstuck when his wife’s Fitbit gave a different account of the events and said her death took place more than an hour before her Fitbit-tracked movements revealed.

Investigators uncovered text messages between the couple, as well as the suspect and his reported pregnant mistress — thought to be a main motive behind the suspected domestic homicide.

Dabate texted his wife a year before the murder saying, "I want a divorce," around the time bank statement records obtained by the Hartford Courant showed credit card charges from hotels, strip clubs and floral purchases for his girlfriend.

The Fitbit was not the only witness. The homes "alarm system, computers, mobile, social media postings all created a timeline that grassed up Dabate to coppers. Then there were the text messages between Dabate and his girlfriend which will make amusing reading for the jury. Things like "I'm ready for u big boy" which are being used as a proof of an affair.
