First Oculus delivered by company’s CEO

Loud shirt and flip-flops makes a big noise in frozen Alaska

Not only was Alaskan Ron Martin the first in the world to get his Oculus Rift VR glasses delivered, he might have been suprised to discover that the frozen delivery boy, wearing flip-flops and loud short-sleeved shirt was the CEO of the company.

It seems that Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and found someone who would stump up the Rift for the product and had mortaged his house to own a GPU with the spec to handle it.  So he thought he would pop up and deliver it himself.  Unfortunately his people forgot to tell him that Alaska is still a bit parky at this time of year so he showed up in short-sleeved loud short and flip-flops.

Martin from Alaska was one of the first, if not the first person to order the Oculus rift back in January. Facebook, who owns Occulus does know the thing or two about marketing so the stunt was pretty well done.  Martin probably feigned surprise pretty well, and wore glasses so he would not be dazzled by Luckey's shirt and did not slam the door his face to open the box in peace.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said:

“I said hey guys, I've been working on this since 2009, we've been working on Oculus since 2012, I'll be damned if some random delivery guy is going to get the satisfaction of delivering the first Rift. That's mine. So I could figure I could take a day out of the launch process and take a quick vacation in Alaska.”

Alaska is just the sort of place where you want to go in the first few days of spring, but we guess that Luckey thought his shirt would just melt any left over snow.  Of course we are pretty sure that a Lady Moose or two would have found it attractive. The fact he was wearing flip-flops attests to the fact he really didn't think the stunt through very well.

Oculus is the first real Virtual Reality headset that will be challenged by HTC Vive and these two have a big chance to become AMD (ATI) vs Nvidia in 2016 and onward. Both have its advantages and disadvantages and one of them might be the steep price that is expected to sink in time to come, probably beyond 2017.

The Q2 2016 can be market as the rest start of the PC, VR gaming and revolution but Oculus sells for $599, Eur 599, or £499 while its main competitor HTC Vive goes for  $799 or £689 and even more than 800 Euro with the VAT attached to the price.
