Universal Display’s Apple ties are proving costly

OLED screens might not be happening after all

Rumours that Apple is not going to have an OLED screen in its iPhone 8 are proving costly to its key supplier Universal Display.

The outfit has been doing well thanks to rumours that the fruity tax-dodging cargo cult will switch to OLED displays in the 2017 iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal, which says that Apple is already asking OLED suppliers to increase their output and deliver prototype displays for evaluation.

But in typical Apple style, it is demanding that the OLED display is better than Samsung’s and as cheap as chips.  Universal Display obviously came to the party which lead its share price to increase. Now it is starting to look as if Apple might change its mind and shareholders are twitchy.

The Wall Street Journal said that Apple is prototyping over 10 different iPhone models, and only one includes an OLED display.

This means that there is a good chance that Apple might not bother with OLED after all. After all its main suppliers have nothing that can match Samsung on OLED. LG Display is close but Sharp, and Japan Display have little experience and could not get the cost down to what Jobs’ Mob wants.
