Larrabee is rasterisation and raytracing
Games Convention 08: Intel bends over
Intel just told the world that it can support both rasterisation and ray tracing. The new chip, whenever it launches in late 2009 or early 2010, will support both DirectX and OpenGL but due to its design it should be able to do raytracing just fine.
Raytracing is the way to the future, but certainly not an exclusive way and certainly not something that will get mainstream in late 2009, early 2010.
The developer community, including publishers, plan to stick with DirectX or OpenGL for years to come and Intel is still not a major player in the graphics world; at least it's not big enough to change the rules of the game.
So far, only Nvidia and AMD really demonstrated some ray tracing on their GPUs and Larrabee is still just Pat Gelsinger's presentation, nothing more.
