Masaya Nakamura bought joy to billions

The bloke who founded Namco and became the “the father of Pac-Man,” has died. Masaya Nakamura Nakamura was 91.

After graduating in 1948 from Yokohama Kogyo Senmon Gakko, he founded Nakamura Seisakusho in 1955, which was renamed Namco in 1977.

As well as Pac-Man the outfit had numerous games hits including “Galaxian,” and “Ridge Racer,” that could be played on home consoles or in entertainment facilities such as game centres.

Namco merged with Bandai in 2005 to form Bandai Namco Group, and its game production assets were branched into Bandai Namco Games in 2006. The outfit is now Bandai Namco Entertainment and Nakamura has been a chairman and a supreme adviser of Bandai Namco Entertainment since 2006.

“Pac-Man” was designed by Namco’s in house video game maker Toru Iwatani. Along with Space Invaders it is the most recognizable and popular video games in history. In 2005 it was listed by Guinness World Records as the “most successful coin-operated arcade machine.” More than 293,820 ‘Pac-Man’ arcade machines were built and installed in arcade venues around the world.
