Over the years it has seemed that football players selected to appear on the cover of Electronic Arts NFL Madden Football have had the unfortunate result of a bad season, or worse yet, getting injured. Many athletes over the years have brushed aside suggestions of a curse; we, on the other hand, are beginning to really wonder about this.
The Madden 12 cover holder was none other than Peyton Hillis who won the honor (if you can call it that) in a fan vote, if we remember correctly. Other than having the bad fortune of being on the Cleveland Browns, he has missed the last two games with an injury. We now learn that his hamstring has not gotten any better and the sidelined situation continues, as he didn’t play again Sunday.
We have to speculate whether the possibility of this curse is real. In the case of next year’s Madden carrying the number 13, and given the potential of this curse, maybe EA should take a year off from having a cover athlete for the title; perhaps that might break the curse. We know we would not be eager to appear on the cover of the 2013 edition, given what we have seen in the past.
