Classic Taito title said to be wanted by Warner Bros

So, it would seem that the trend to secure the rights to classic arcade games and design movies around them takes another strange turn, with the news that Warner Bros is talking to Taito to obtain the film rights for none other than Space Invaders.

This arcade classic which arrived in 1978 is credited by many for starting the video game revolution.  In fact, it was a vertical shooter that is considered primitive by today’s standards, but was quite challenging and spawned a variety of re-makes as well as imitators, if memory serves us correctly.

Still, we don’t really know what kind of movie you could make out of a game as primitive as Space Invaders. The game really has little background story from what we know; and we are stumped as to how this basic game could be turned into a two-hour movie that people are willing to pay to see. Maybe they have something else planned and they are looking to just use the Space Invaders branding or the game as a center point in the movie.

Our best guess is that Taito will be happy to get some revenue out of Space Invaders and will likely strike a deal with Warner Bros. We just can’t see this as a sci fi epic thriller that we will want to see.
