New P1 Gen 7 Thinkpad has LPCAMM2

Lenovo's latest ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 laptop is poised to be the pioneer in adopting the new LPCAMM2 memory form factor, dethroning the traditional SODIMM sticks.

The tech titan has turned its attention to AI prowess with its new laptop, boasting an Intel Core Ultra CPU and Nvidia RTX 3000 Ada GPU. Yet, it's the world-first use of the LPCAMM2 memory standard that's turning heads.

This memory consumes 64 per cent less space and 61 per cent less active power than its predecessor, thanks to its foundation on LPDDR5X memory, rather than the standard DDR5.

The LPCAMM2 standard, initially a brainchild of Dell's technology, was introduced as CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module) in Dell's Precision 7670 back in 2022.

In a surprising twist of tech generosity, Dell bequeathed its intellectual property to JEDEC, the memory technology standardisation body, in 2023. Come September 2023, JEDEC ratified the specifications, and LPCAMM2 (Low-Power Compression Attached Memory Module) was born.

Samsung was quick off the mark, announcing intentions to manufacture LPCAMM2 modules, boasting a 50 per cent boost in performance and a 70 per cent increase in efficiency compared to their SODIMM ancestors. Furthermore, LPCAMM2 promises dual-channel memory capabilities without the need for an additional module.
