550MB/s reads, 500MB/s writes

Yesterday,  Plextor announced its next-generation ultraportable external solid state disk drives featuring USB Type-C Gen II ports, the Plextor EX-1 series.

These portable drives now offer faster connectivity than many other available options with continuous reads up to 550MB/s and continuous writes up to 500MB/s, all inside a durable and shock resistant aluminum casing weighing just 30 grams (1.05 ounces). The EX-1 is quiet during operation, lightweight and also supports mobile storage on Android devices with OGT.

Plextor has designed and manufactured the EX-1 to the company’s highest standards. The drives feature a mean-time between failure (MTFB) rate of 2.4 million hours, which is higher than most traditional SATA III SSDs like the Samsung 850 EVO (1.5m), SanDisk Ultra II (1.75m) or Samsung 850 Pro (2m).

“Data transfer speed, durability, and stability are the key factors for consumers when shopping for an external storage device,” says Plextor's Senior Director Eva Lee. “Plextor's highly regarded SSD technology has given EX1 its excellent reading/writing speeds, an extended service life, and stable performance. The new generation Type-C interface offers even faster connectivity with the latest computers and mobile devices.”

The drives will be available in gold and titanium silver, while the packaging also contains a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter cable, a carrying pouch and AES-256 encryption software.

Availability

Plextor  said the drives will be released sometime in November in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity options, but has not yet specified any pricing. The drives are backed by a five-year warranty.
