Amazon Echo speaks German and British

by on14 September 2016

Available September 28 or October 26

Amazon has just announced that British and German customers can pre-order Amazon Echo and Echo dot and they will get it delivered on September 28 in the UK, and October 26 in Germany or Austria.

In the UK the Amazon Echo speaker that supports voice controls and commands is selling for £149 and speaks British now. The original Amazon Echo was available in US and Canada and it was not ready to speak other accents or officially ship outside of US or Canada.

As far as we could check, the Amazon.es, Amazon.it, Amazon.fr or Amazon.nl sites do not offer Echo as these languages seem to be tougher to master, or harder to sell at this time.

Amazon UK is sweating up the deal and it will give you to Amazon Echo speaker for £99 as long as you get the free trial of Amazon Prime membership and this includes the current Prime members.

Amazon Germany and Austria will want EUR 179,99 and it plans to ship the black or white Echo speaker on the October 26. They will also give you the product €50 cheaper, but only if you get selected. Amazon.de has a strange way of attracting customers as you cannot actually buy the product, if selected, you will be invited to buy it.

The disappointing part is that the Amazon Echo for UK and DE / AT seems to use the same hardware as the Amazon Echo in the US. This is not the updated version that many have hoped for. Some apps such as Amazon Music or Spotify will work across countries but german Echo will get support for Spigel Online, bahn.de - Deutsche Bahn?, My-Taxy or Chefkoch among others. The Uk version will support Jamie Oliver app, Sky News, Just Eat, Uber, Sky scanner, fitbit, laundry app and many others. Amazon heavily invests in localisation of the Alexa services.

Amazon US, and UK and Germany have all got the new device called Amazon Echo Dot. It is basically a second generation hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control smart home devices, provide information, read the news, set alarms, and more. There is a catch, you need a 3.5 inch (insert iPhone 7 joke here.) or Bluetooth speaker to actually see the results from the Amazon Echo Dot.

Amazon Echo can dim the lights or control the temperature but you will need to own a compatible digital thermostat such as Nest or compatible smart light bulbs. Amazon supports wemo, Samsung smartThings, Hue, Insteao, Wink, Nest or Ecobee. Since smart home is still a mess, as many things wont work with each other, you get a limited functionality with devices such as Amazon Echo or Echo dot, but this is for sure the step in the right direction.
