Microsoft wins Motorola ban

by on22 May 2012

Patent trollage pays off

The US International Trade Commission has banned the importation of some Motorola phones at the request of Microsoft.

Vole had been doing some patent trollage on its rival, the Google backed Motorola. The agency found Motorola violated a Microsoft patent for that software that creates meeting requests and schedules them on mobile devices. It looks like Motorola will need to change the software in the phones before they come into the US.

However the ruling is now subject to a 60-day presidential review and Motorola has to post a bond of 33 cents for each phone that has entered the US. Microsoft had hit Motorola with a demand for nine patents, but only managed to make one of them stick.  It is not clear which phones Motorola will not have to bring into the country. The company said this morning it will appeal.
