Now they can afford an iPad in just three months

As its number one customer, Apple sends in US NGOs to investigate labour practices, Foxconn has just announced that it has given its staff a salary hike.

Junior level employees will get pay rises by between 16 to 25 per cent.  Workers will now make US$285 a month with a raise to US$349.  This is possible if an employee passes a technical examination. Of course any pay rises will not apply the huge numbers of employees who work at the plant for next to nothing as part of work experience for their technical qualifications.  It has been estimated that Foxconn is a huge employer of such staff.

Foxconn last raised wages in June 2010 when employees got a 30 per cent increase. The company said that it would provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry.
