TSMC swamped with orders
by Nick Farrell on16 February 2012
Sub-40nm means everyone wants to be a friend
Chip manufacturer TSMC might have staff wanting to exit by the roof and a Chairman who thinks he is a zookeeper, and the occasional explosion, but the orders are rolling in.
According to Digitimes TSMC has received enough orders from its major clients such as AMD, Broadcom, MediaTek, MStar Semiconductor, Nvidia and Qualcomm to completely book the foundry’s production capacity for advanced sub-40nm manufacturing processes.
Texas Instruments, Freescale Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics and Infineon Technologies have also increased their orders to TSMC in order to to meet increasing demand. It is starting to look like smartphone, PC and consumer electronics industries are rebuilding inventory. There is a belief that the semiconductor industry will bottom out in the first quarter and start to grow through the beginning of the fourth quarter.
