Apple stops selling apps at its download site

by on21 December 2010

Replaced by a new app store
Jobs' Mob has announced that the outfit's popular Mac OS X Downloads site will no longer feature apps.

In an e-mail message to registered developers, the company stated that as of January 6, 2011 the Mac OS X Downloads site will "no longer offer apps." Instead those who write code for the Apple will have to submit it Mac App Store, which Apple says will be "the best destination for users to discover, purchase, and download your apps.

But that will be bad news for many Apple fans who came to the site looking for third-party software, browsable by category, date, popularity, or the ever-coveted-by-developers Staff Picks.
The move to an app store however will miff developers as not every piece of software listed on the Downloads site will be available on the Mac App Store.
