Samsung has now officially announced the new 990 EVO PCIe 5.0 M2 SSD series, supporting both PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces, standard M.2 2280 form-factor, and coming in 1TB and 2TB capacities. According to Samsung, the new 990 EVO SSD series is up to 43 percent faster compared to the 970 EVO Plus.

According to Samsung, the new 990 EVO SSD series is designed for the future, as it supports both PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 interfaces. Specification-wise, the 990 EVO SSD series comes in a standard M.2 2280 form factor and will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. Samsung uses its own in-house controller paired up with its own V-NAND TLC NAND, offering sequential read and write performance of up to 5,000MB/s and 4,200MB/s, with random 4K performance of up to 700K and 800K IOPS, respectively. The endurance rating is set at 600TB and 1,200TB TBW for 1TB and 2TB versions.

It also features Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which uses the host processor's DRAM in order to optimize performance even with DRAM-less design.

In addition to being 43 percent faster, Samsung also claims that the new 990 EVO SSD series is up to 70 percent more power efficient compared to the predecessor, which will be important for notebook users.

A five-year warranty backs up the Samsung 990 EVO and comes bundled with Samsung Magician Software.

The Samsung 990 EVO series should be available soon with an MSRP set at $124.99 for the 1TB model and $209.99 for the 2TB model.
