932 Million MSM chips and modems

Qualcomm, is planning to ship more than 932 Million MSM chips by Christmas.

Qualcomm President Derek Aberle was clear that in  2015 it plans to ship 932 million of the chips and since the year is nearly over they should have all found homes by now. The 932 million number is the combination of SoC (System on Chip) and Gobi Modems Qualcomm has sold.

Apple phones use the Qualcomm modem for its LTE service so this contributes to this number as there are a large number of iPhones selling each quarter. Qualcomm's Snapdragon is present in every market segment as the Snapdragon 200 covers the entry level, Snapdragon 400 the higher lower end, the Snapdragon 615 is the mainstream chip and the Snapdragon 800 series is responsible for the high end.

It will be interesting to see what will happen in the course of 2016 as the smartphone market faces increased competition. Companies like Huawei have announced the Kirin 950 latest generation 16nm SoC and MediaTek should soon have its X20 20nm product. Samsung also has its Exynos processor for its smartphones. All will be fighting for the high end market performance crown.

In any case it will be a fun year with increased competition.
