Mediatek could double tablet SoCs shipments next year

by on26 November 2013

Six to eight new parts in pipeline

Mediatek is apparently planning to step up its game in the mobile space. The company launched four tablet SoCs this year, but Digitimes is reporting that it will introduce six to eight new parts next year.

The company is said to be working on eight-core, quad-core and dual-core chips, but that doesn’t tell us much. Since Mediatek practically ditched A9 products, we are expecting to see octa- and quad-core A7 chips, along with some A15 and A12 parts. Also, keep in mind that the company has already announced the MT8135, a big.LITTLE tablet SoC with two A15 and two A7 cores and Imagination Technologies Power VR G6200 graphics. We should see more big.LITTLE tablet parts next year.

Mediatek is currently the fifth largest ARM SoC maker on the planet and it appears to be focusing on mid-range and low-end designs. The approach is paying off and it is now expected to double its tablet SoC shipments to more than 40 million units next year.
