Intel usually shows off a few new things at IDF and we would be surprised not to see some 14nm parts for notebooks, mobile devices and desktops. It is interesting to note that the keynote that is set to be held on Tuesday September 10 by Mr. Krzanich and Intel President Renee James is supposed to present a new course in the company’s future.
Krzanich and James are well underway in resetting the course of the company with a clear emphasis on mobile computing leadership. Intel wants to show the world that it is fit to swim in mobile waters and as a part of that push, Intel mentioned new Atom Bay Trail parts at IFA, along with and 4G LTE support.
The new XMM 7160 modem for Bay Trail SoC promises to support 15 different LTE bands. This is a slim modem for LTE smartphones that supports 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE and DC HSDPA, pretty much everything you possibly need. Intel promises Android and Windows 8.1 compatibility, 2X better performance and substantially better battery life.
The first device based on XMM 7160 modem is set to show up in Q1 2014 and Intel already claims that it is shipping parts to manufacturers. Most likely we will see some design wins at CES 2014.
We would not be surprised to see some working prototypes at IDF 2013 next week. It remains to be seen how will Intel do against Qualcomm, the absolute leader on this market and Nvidia that is slowly but surely moving toward SoC processors with integrated 3G / 4G modems.
