Roundup: Along with 890FX chipset

AMD has officially let loose its first two AM3 six-core processors, the Phenom II X6 1055T and 1090T Black Edition. In addition to those two, AMD has also introduced a new chipset, the 890FX.

As you probably already know, the Phenom II X6 1055T works at 2.8GHz, has 3MB of L2 and 6MB of L3 cache and a 125W TDP. The faster, Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition works at 3.2GHz and has all the same specs as the 1055T except for the fact that this one comes with an unlocked multiplier. The Phenom II X6 1055T is priced at US $199 while the 1090T BE costs US $295. As for the AMD 890FX chipset, the only novelty is the new SB850 southbrigde and support for SATA 6Gbps.

Most reviews agree that AMD still offers better performance for the same money when compared to similar Intel offerings. Of course, such processors as the 1090T Black Edition make sense only if you are using applications that are well threaded, for example 3D and video processing software.

The only drawback is when you pair it up with light threaded applications where quad or even dual core make more sense. The good side is that these new six core parts feature Turbo Core, an automatic overclocking technology which overclocks up to three cores for those less threaded applications.
