Expected in Q4 2013

Last week at IDF, Intel did mention that they're aiming at 15nm after 22nm. Global foundries, AMD’s only CPU manufacturing hope is also planning to transition to production of 22nm chips in 2012 whereas probably two years later, they plan to go after 15nm.

Intel didn’t mention at IDF that 15 or 16nm, how some scientist call this process, is still under development and that not even the manufacturing tools are ready, but it all indicates that it should be ready by late 2013.

You get this date if you follow Intel tick-tock strategy and if you have in mind that in Q4 2009 Intel starts production of 32nm CPUs, two years later in Q4 2011 they should be ready with 22nm and two years after than in Q4 2013 they should be ready to start with 15nm.

Intel needs 22nm and 15 nano chips for system-on-a-chip market, hanheld, consumer devices and of course many netbooks, notebooks, desktops and servers. On 15nm you should be able to have 2X transistor numbers than on 32nm with same or lower TDP. This is what semi conductor industry is all about.
