Nehalem only supports DDR3 memory

No DDR2, ever

We just
got confirmation from the Nehalem's Chief Architect that Nehalem won't be able to support DDR2. As far as Intel is concerned there won't be any new Nehalem generation 45nm CPUs that will support DDR2 memory.

As you might know, Nehalem has an on die memory controller and the memory controller is finally off the chipset. This makes memory access faster and this is something that AMD has been doing for many years now. This turned out to be faster and better way.

The problem that you might have is that it’s not that easy to change the memory that you can support, and since Intel launches Core i7 which is considered as high-end, they don’t even want to think about DDR2 support.

Other iterations of Nehalem will come later in 2009 and by that time DDR3 prices will go down and become more affordable. That is why Intel won’t be introducing any Nehalems with DDR2 support.
