Phones With 6GB RAM Incoming

by on09 September 2015

6GB of RAM to enable real phone productivity.

Moore's law may not hold true in processor tech any more, but memory chips keep getting denser, bigger, faster.

Guess what, we disagree with a lot of the Internet press machine again. We're not really sure whether that's arrogant, missinformed or very intelligent. You be the judges of that, after reading our two cents on this piece of news.

Not content to sit on their laureals, Samsung has announced a new generation of LPDDR4 chips for next year. They will make possible 6GB of RAM in next year's flagship smartphones.

We have already written about a phone with 5GB of RAM and we are looking forward to reviewing it. The only problem is, at the moment there is no real use case for so much RAM. But this is where we differ from some other technology websites who claim that so much RAM in a phone is overkill. It won't be soon, and here's why:

You can already buy a gadget which projects an image of the keyboard on a flat surface in front of you and monitors your fingers to see what virtual key you are pressing at any one time. You can also buy one of a number of handheld projectors which aren't half bad. Now put those two in the same case with your smartphone, slap Windows 10 on it and you have a perfectly capable, supremely portable computer/phone/music player/fitness tracker/digital assistant/.... You get the point.

So, another generation of miniaturisation, maybe two. We'll be looking back at the time when our computers weiged a kilogram and laugh.
