Trigger DSLR via SMS, Internet, GPS data too

Fudzilla started to follow the makers market around the inexpensive LinkIt boards and so far we saw some impressive projects.

The latest one is a DSLR remote controller made by the maker/developer Sergey Grischenko and his team from Ekaterinburg, Russia. The team chose LinkIt One development board from the house of MediaTek for their DSLR remote controller project.

The LinkIt bundle included all necessary hardware and software components including ARM system-on-chip, GSM/GPRS modem, GPS and Wi-Fi companion chipsets, operating system and software development kit.

This credit card sized board has a lot of computational power and the team even developed a casing for the do-it-yourself DSLR remote. The basic function is that when connected to a DSLR camera it can make a photo. There is a demonstration of a DSLR remote wired by camera, but the team went a bit further with the project.

For instance, device built by Grischenko and his team can add geotags to EXIF data of images shot with their DSLR remote controller. They use the GPS data provided by the GPS chip from the LinkIt One board.

Thanks to Wi-Fi and GSM/GPRS connectivity feature, the DSLR remote can also be triggered by SMS or over the Internet. You can program the controller to shoot pictures continuously or periodically from time to time. Now this is something cool.

You can shoot a picture when the embedded or external sensor report an event. This tiny device combined with DSLR could help you make your very own Google StreetView–like map system. This feature can enable a superior quality surveillance camera, or smart station for long-term time-lapse pictures. Alex Drozhin contributed to this report.
