Titanfall ships with 792p rendering

by on11 March 2014

Resolution increase to come with later patch

So Titanfall launches with 792p rendering. Despite the comments from Respawn when this was first revealed, we think it was almost too much to hope that they would be able to optimize Titanfall enough to get 900p or 1080p rendering ready in time for shipment of the game, it was just asking too much as there were so many other things that needed attention before release.

Now we are hearing that post-launch, Titanfall is likely to get a 1080p patch in the future. While Respawn lead Engineer Richard Baker says that they have been experimenting with adjusting the resolution higher and lower and how much ESRAM they are going to use. Baker told Digital Foundry that they are thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so that they don’t have as large of a target to render.

When Baker is talking about targets, he is talking about a 1080p non-anti-aliased or a 900p with FXAA. It takes time to optimize while at the same time they don’t want to give anything up for the higher resolution. While he admits that they have looked at a number of things, so far none of them are something that the team at Respawn is happy with.

While it would have been ideal Baker admits, to have the game already running at a rock solid 60 frames per second when they shipped, more time is necessary to understand how to get the optimization out of the GPU. It is a new system and obviously time is needed to get it right so, the game is shipping with the same resolution that Xbox One players saw in the beta which is just fine by us.
