Al Lowe looking to Kickstart an adventure

Legendary designer Al Lowe and Replay Games are seeking “crowdfunding” using Kickstarter to fund the development of a remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry.

The goal with the new Leisure Suit Larry would be to build the game that they want without publishers, distributors, or retailers telling them to “dub it down” or “make it more mainstream.” The team is looking to raise $500,000 for the project.

The actual project would release a “Reloaded” version of the original Sierra On-Line version of Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. The Reloaded version would be powered by the Unity 3D engine and would use a modern point and click interface with touchscreen support. It would be targeted for a DRM-Free release for Windows using Steam. If it proves popular, then maybe it will be released for other platforms as well, with Mac OS X being the next most likely.

Lowe and other Sierra On-Line adventure game veterans (including Josh Mandel, Sabine Duvall, and Leslie Balfour) have been recruited to work on the project for Replay. Originally, it was announced that Replay was planning to put out HD versions for other releases in the series in Q4 2012, but it is unclear now if this is still the plan.

If funding does exceed the targeted amount of $500,000 in pledges, the extra money will be put into fully localized voiceovers and then ports to other platforms, and then maybe a new soundtrack recorded by a live orchestra and additional added features for the game.

To get fans donating, Replay has come up with a very interesting selection of rewards to contributors to the project, with everything from a trip to Vegas with Lowe and Mandel to cameos in the game. The campaign will run for four weeks, and as of this posting, Replay had already received pledges for over $50,000 toward the development of the game.
