PC MMO racing title to break new ground

Electronic Arts will be launching the new MMO racer known as Need for Speed World in July, according to the rumblings of our sources. The new racer breaks ground by combining elements of racing along with the elements of a role playing progression-style game that makes for an interesting mix.

While the title is being called “Free,” that is actually not entirely accurate; because if you want to play the game beyond level 10, you will have to buy what is being called a “Starter Pack” that will be sold for $19.99. In an interesting move by EA, the Starter Pack will be available from both the EA Store electronically as well as at retailers, which is unique.

Purchase of the Starter Pack right away will give you beta access as well as a head start on access ahead of the general public. In addition, the Starter Pack will also give you VIP Status and give you the ability to progress beyond level 10. It isn’t clear yet what EA has planned for the money making model for this game, but we have to think that micro transactions will be the main source of revenue beyond the purchase of the Starter Pack. Whispers suggest that additional packs may be available for purchase at a later date, as well, depending on the success of the title. However, the company does not look to deploy a subscription model to support the title.

The game will be available for PC only; and if you want to be able to handle all of the eye candy you will need a PC that can handle it. According to our sources, the better the PC the better the eye candy, and the better the game will play. This is no different from any other PC game these days. Our sources tell us that at least for the time being the company has no plans to offer the game for any other platform; but apparently the possibility of it showing up on the Mac at some point in the future isn’t out of the question, according to sources we have talked with.
