Microsoft sells lower spec, cheaper Surface

by on05 February 2018

Cheaper and slower

Software King of the World Microsoft has launched a new version of its Surface Laptop with a price tag of $799.

You can see the cheaper Surface Laptop at the Microsoft Store. The $799 variant ships with Intel’s Core m3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. In other words, it is slower and cheaper than the previous version at $999 Core i5 processor model. It also has a lower amount of RAM.

This makes the Surface Laptop model compete directly with Microsoft’s base Surface Pro model, which includes Intel’s Core m3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

To make the deal less useful, Microsoft still sells the essential Surface Type Cover separately, so you do need to factor in an additional $129.99 to get a comparable device.

The launch comes just days after the software maker revealed its Surface revenue had only increased one percent year-over-year in the crucial holiday quarter. Microsoft launched its Surface Laptop and refreshed its Surface Pro earlier in 2017, but both haven’t done much to melt the markets.

A cheaper Surface Laptop at the entry price could certainly help with sales numbers and those revenue figures. In the US, though, the cost of PCs has been slowly increasing.
