MSI packs GTX 970M in new 14-inch GS40 Phantom notebook

Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ quad-core CPU as well

Gaming notebooks usually end up to be a desktop replacement device rather than a portable notebook due to their size, weight and battery life but now it appears that MSI managed to change that a bit by releasing the new 14-inch GS40 Phantom notebook.

Designed around a 14-inch 1920x1080 IPS screen, the MSI GS40 Phantom hardware is packed in a "thin and stealth" aluminum chassis which is 19.5-21.8mm thick and just 1.6kg heavy. Despite its rather modest size, MSI still manage to pack some impressive hardware, including Intel's 6th generation Skylake Core i7-6700HQ quad-core CPU with Hyper-Threading support, 6MB of L3 cache, 2.6GHz base and 3.5GHz maximum Turbo clocks as well an Nvidia GTX 970M graphics card with 3GB of GDDR5 memory.

The rest of the features include up to 32GB of DDR4-2133 memory, 2.5-inch HDD and M.2 PCIe Gen3 SSD, SteelSeries RGB LED-backlit keyboard, Dynaudio sound with ESS Sabre HiFi Audio DAC and Nahimic Audio Enhancer, USB 3.1 Type-C port, plenty of USB 3.0 ports and a 4-cell battery.

The cooling of a small 14-inch GS40 Phantom notebook is done with MSI's exclusive Cooler Boost 3 technology with five heatpipes and two fans which actively cool down the CPU and the GPU in three different profiles, balancing between performance and battery life.

MSI also plans to offer a version of the GS40 Phatnom with overclockable Intel Core i7-6820HK, but we still do not have any details regarding the availability date.

Unfortunately, MSI did not reveal any details regarding the starting price of the new GS40 Phantom notebook but did note that it should show up in retail soon and we suspect that it could start somewhere in the US $1500 range.
