Microsoft reveals Acer's $169 Chromebook competitor

by on17 July 2015

Calls it Cloudbook

It took Microsoft some time to come up with a strategy against Chromebooks, and now it seems the first of the new Cloudbook notebooks will be available in middle of August.

The new PC notebook category is going to be branded as Cloudbook, as the netbook moniker died a while ago. Cloudbook sounds fancier despite the fact that this notebook will have little to do with Cloud.

The first of many is called Acer Aspire One Cloudbook and it will be available in 11- and 14-inch version. Microsoft only shared that the 11-inch version will start selling at $169 but it want keep to tell us about the internals of the notebook.

We would expect something with an Atom processor, probably some Pentium or Celeron parts and 2GB or RAM with some proper storage options. The name Cloudbook can only be justified with a could connection to Microsoft One drive, an online storage. Windows 10 makes sure that you can share files a bit easier and put them in could in no time.

The mid-August launch seems to coincide with Intel CEO Brian Krzanich's IDF 2015 keynote that is set to start at 9AM on August 18th.

Of course, the main competitor to this Cloudbook comes from the house of Google and it is known by the name Chromebook. The HP Chromebook 11 G3 sells for $159 and it packs a 2.16GHz Intel Celeron N2840, 1366x768 screen, 2GB memory and 16GB SSD. We would expect similar hardware from the Acer Aspire One Cloudbook 11-inch version too.
