NEC launches insanely thin 15.6-inch ultrabook

12.8mm, Ivy on board

Compact 13-inch ultrabooks tend to get much more coverage than their bigger siblings, but some vendors think there is a market for sleek 15.6-inch ultrabooks.

NEC is one of them and it claims its LaVie X is the thinnest ultrabook on the planet. NEC engineers managed to squeeze an 1080p 15.6-inch display in 1.59kg package, measuring 374x255x12.8mm. The rest of the spec sheet is not half bad, either.

It’s based on Intel’s Core i7-3517U, backed with 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0 and HDMI out are also on board. Of course, it will ship with Windows 8.

NEC claims it managed to shave off a few millimeters thanks to an innovative cooling system and the company definitely managed to pull it off without skimping on the specs. Sadly, we still don’t know the price, but don’t expect the LaVie X to come cheap.
